July 2024 – The Engineering Digest
Welcome to this month’s edition of the Hythe Engineering newsletter, bringing you the latest updates and achievements across the Royal Navy and related engineering sectors.
Six New Amphibious Warships for Royal Marines

The Royal Navy will soon enhance its amphibious capabilities with six new Multi-Role Support Ships (MRSS).
These state-of-the-art vessels will replace the ageing HMS Albion, HMS Bulwark, and the Bay-class support vessels. The MRSS will be highly versatile, and capable of deploying vehicles, aircraft, and various uncrewed systems for complex missions. They will also provide essential medical support, acting as primary casualty receiving ships.
The introduction of these ships will ensure the Royal Marines can conduct operations anywhere in the world with increased efficiency and effectiveness.
HMS Diamond Returns to Portsmouth 🇬🇧

HMS Diamond has returned to Portsmouth following a historic six-month deployment in the Middle East.
During her mission, she safeguarded vital international shipping lanes, ensuring the safe passage of global trade through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. HMS Diamond’s crew displayed exceptional skill and bravery, shooting down nine drones and a Houthi missile.
Notably, on January 9th, she neutralised seven drones in a single night, marking a record for the Royal Navy.
Royal Navy Supports Hurricane Beryl Relief Efforts

HMS Trent is set to deploy to the Cayman Islands to provide crucial support following the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl. The patrol ship will arrive this weekend, carrying essential supplies such as bottled water and emergency equipment.
The crew, along with a Crisis Response Troop of 24 Commando Royal Engineers, will offer assistance to communities affected by flooding and storm damage.
Their mission includes planning, information operations, and providing urgent aid to help restore normalcy in the region.
Hythe Apprentices Make Final 18 of Prestigious Award

Congratulations to our apprentices for making it to the final 18 nominees of the prestigious Kings Silver Medal Award. This achievement highlights their outstanding teamwork, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
The nominees will participate in an outdoor pursuits course designed to test their abilities and teamwork skills. Following the outdoor course, six finalists will be chosen to attend a panel interview in London this October.
The winners will receive a certificate from His Majesty the King and a £2,000 prize.
Engineering Apprenticeships a Priority for New Labour Government

The recent Labour victory signals significant changes for the UK’s engineering sector. Experts are optimistic about potential economic stability and growth, driven by a long-term industrial strategy.
Labour’s focus on sustainability aligns with the industry’s green transition goals. Additionally, there is a strong call to improve STEM education and review the Apprenticeship Levy.
These measures aim to address skill shortages and create more apprenticeship opportunities, ensuring a well-prepared workforce for the future.
Until next time…
